What is a transfer maid?
A transfer maid is a domestic helper who is already working in Singapore and is moving from one employer to another, rather than returning to her home country. Because she is already here, the hiring process skips overseas recruitment, flights and much of the waiting. Both the current employer and the new employer need to agree to the transfer before the Work Permit can be processed.
For many families, a transfer is the practical middle ground: you get someone with real Singapore experience, you can meet her before committing, and she can usually start within a few weeks.
Why families choose a transfer maid
A transfer maid suits households that need help sooner rather than later, or that would rather hire someone with a track record they can check.
- Faster to start. No overseas recruitment or flight means a shorter timeline, often 1 to 3 weeks.
- Local experience. She already understands Singapore homes, HDB and condo living, and local expectations.
- You can verify. Meet her in person or by video call and check references from her current or previous employer.
- Lower upfront cost. Skipping the air ticket and overseas processing usually keeps initial costs down.
How the transfer process works
We coordinate the handover between the outgoing and incoming employer and handle the MOM paperwork so the timeline stays clear.
- Shortlist and interview. We put forward transfer candidates that fit your needs. You meet them and check references.
- Both employers agree. The current employer consents to the transfer and the release date is confirmed.
- Work Permit application. We apply for the new Work Permit and wait for In-Principle Approval (IPA) from MOM.
- Insurance and security bond. Medical and personal accident insurance and the $5,000 security bond are put in place before she starts.
- Permit issued and she arrives. Once the permit is issued, we accompany her to your home, ready to begin.
Transfer maid vs fresh maid
The right choice depends on how quickly you need help and whether you would rather train someone yourself.
| Transfer maid | Fresh maid | |
|---|---|---|
| Currently in Singapore | Yes | No, recruited from overseas |
| Typical time to deploy | About 1 to 3 weeks | About 4 to 8 weeks |
| Singapore experience | Yes | First-time helper |
| Air ticket and overseas processing | Not needed | Required |
| Starting salary | Often higher (experienced) | Usually lower |
| Training before start | Already experienced | Trained at our centre |
Timelines are typical ranges and can vary with MOM processing and individual circumstances. We confirm the expected timeline for your case before you commit.
Who a transfer maid suits best
Consider a transfer maid if you need help within a few weeks, you want someone who already knows how a Singapore household runs, or you would like to interview and check references before deciding. Families managing a new baby, an elderly parent, or a sudden gap in help often prefer transfers for the speed.
